Himmler Leads PBA Qualifier

Brian Himmler of Cincinnati rolled an 1,862 eight-game pinfall (232..7 average) to top a field of 84 non-exempt bowlers Tuesday competing for seven berths in the Professional Bowling Association (PBA) Don Johnson Buckeye State Eliminator at Sequoia Pro Bowl.

Other bowlers moving on to the Round of 64 were: Christopher Collins, Savannah, Ga., 1,816; 2009 USBC Masters champion John Nolen, Waterford, Mich., 1,809; Jonathan Van Hees, Newport, R.I., 1,808; Scott Newell, Deland, Fla., 1,791; Tim Mack, Indianapolis, 1,785 and the top non-member Richard Jones of Bedford, Ohio, 1,665.

The Round of 64 will begin by bowling a seven-game block on Thursday after which the field will be cut to 33 players who will advance to two additional rounds on Friday.

After the Round of 33, the field will be cut to 16 players who will compete in elimination rounds on Saturday to determine the four remaining players for the finals.

For the Eliminator Rounds, bowlers will be grouped in foursomes based on 21-game pinfall.

Each elimination round will consist of two games with the lowest two-game pinfall in each group eliminated from the tournament. For the ESPN finals, which will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern, four players bowl one game on the same pair with the low scorer eliminated and so on until the final two bowl to decide the winner.

In addition to the new format, the bowlers will have to navigate through the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour’s demanding Viper and Scorpion lane conditions. In the elimination rounds, bowlers will bowl on Viper on the right lane and the Scorpion on the left lane which will put a premium on making lane adjustments.
