Eagle Tops PBA Senior Mooresville Classic

Ten-time Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour champion Dale Eagle says he’s feeling his age, but bowled like a teenager Tuesday to emerge as the 16-game qualifying leader in the PBA Senior Mooresville Miller High Life Classic at George Pappas Victory Lanes.

Eagle, who won his last title in the Senior Clarksville, TN Open in 2005, fired second-round games of 228, 259, 274, 268, 258, 256, 280 and 257 for a near-record round total of 2,080 pins and a 16-game total of 3,965.

“I had nine in a row a couple of times, but the lanes changed and I didn’t react in time,” the Tavares, FL, resident said. “But overall, my concentration was really good today. I changed my release and entry angle a little bit, and that’s about all.

“It’s been a while since I’ve won. I’ve been bowling good,” he said, “but that’s the way it goes. I can feel it in my bones, though. I’m 63, I’m walking a lot to stay in shape, but I can still feel it.

“As long as I can hang in there, I’ll hang around,” Eagle added. “When I feel like I can’t win, I’ll quit.”

PBA and newly-inducted United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia of Jackson, NJ, was second with 3,861 pins, seven better than Mark Williams of Beaumont, TX.

After 16 games, the tournament has produced 12 perfect games, five shy of the tournament record 17 set in April in Jackson, MI.

The field of 144 has been cut to the top 32 qualifiers for match play rounds that begin Wednesday morning. Match play begins with the Round of 32 which will feature players who qualified in positions 17 through 32. Bowlers qualifying in positions 9 through 16 receive one bye and those qualifying in the top eight receive two byes. The Round of 8, semi-final and championship matches are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday.
