Petraglia Leads, Resets Qualifing Record

Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia continued to pace the PBA Senior Sun Bowl In The Villages field in record style by retaining his lead after second round qualifying Monday at Spanish Springs Lanes.

With an overall 3,031 PBA Senior Tour record 12-game pinfall (252.5 average), the 62-year-old Petraglia from Jackson, NJ, holds a 91-pin lead over two-time Senior Tour titlist Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska.

After breaking his own Senior Tour record by bowling 1,557 for six games Sunday, Petraglia also broke his own 12-game record with games of 233, 249, 228, 267, 229 and 268 Monday.

“It’s easy to get to the pocket, you just have to adjust to get the pin carry,” Petraglia said. “For me it was important to put a little more speed on the ball and go more direct to the pocket today.”

Petraglia is a 14-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour and six-time Senior Tour champion. He is riding a streak of making the top 32 in the last eight Senior Tour tournaments he has entered and most assuredly will make it nine in a row after tomorrow’s final qualifying round.

“How I bowl and adjust in tomorrow’s morning block will be especially important because that will be the same lane condition I’ll be bowling on when match play starts on Wednesday,” Petraglia added.

His most recent Senior Tour win was the 2008 Senior Jackson (Mich.) Open. He also finished second to Wayne Webb in last year’s PBA Senior U.S. Open.

Hometown bowler Gerald Teel of The Villages, who is currently in 24th, is the only bowler thus far in the tournament to bowl two 300 games.

The field of 125 players will bowl one more six-game qualifying round on Tuesday after which the top 32 players will advance to round-robin match play Wednesday which will culminate with the stepladder finals at 7 p.m. Eastern.
