Malott, the 2008-09 PBA Player of the Year, finished with a 12-game total of 2,809 pins in the third of five PBA World Series of Bowling “animal pattern” stages. He also moved into eighth place in the PBA World Championship standings, based on 36 games bowled thus far in the World Series.
The top 16 players from Wednesday’s Chameleon qualifying round advance to a nine-game round-robin match play round next Tuesday. After 21 games, the top five will advance to the stepladder finals which will be conducted on Friday, Nov. 5, at South Point. Defending Chameleon champion Bill O’Neill of Southampton, PA, qualified for match play in seventh place, his third straight top 16 finish.
After the first three stages of World Series competition, O’Neill and Michael Haugen Jr. of Carefree, AZ, are the only players in the field of 252 who have qualified for match play on the Cheetah, Viper and Chameleon patterns.
After three sessions, 38 different players have advanced to next week’s match play rounds.

PBA WORLD SERIES OF BOWLING NOTEBOOK:
● The first two-handed players to advance to match play got it done in the
Chameleon round. Finland’s Osku Palermaa finished second to Malott with 2,757
pins, averaging 229.75, while Australia’s Jason Belmonte posted a 2,702 total
for 12 games to finish the round in ninth place.
● Reigning PBA Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., in his
first competition since undergoing hernia surgery in mid-September, had his best
finish of the PBA World Series in the Chameleon round, finishing 45th in the
Cheetah round and 203rd in the Viper.
● The Howard Stern Show’s “Scott The Engineer” Salem, an avid New Jersey league
bowler making his first appearance in a professional tournament, may be seeing
his hopes of a top 200 finish disappear. But the 58-year-old continues to
improve even as lane conditions become more challenging. On the Wednesday’s
Chameleon lane condition, he averaged 175 on the nose to finish 239th in the
field of 252. Salem’s performances are being covered by HowardTV as well as
Stern’s Sirius Satellite Radio show.
● The leading woman after 36 games was reigning PBA Tournament of Champions
winner Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., with 7,682 pins, 45 pins away from the 63rd
and final cashing position in the World Championship standings. Liz Johnson of
Cheektowaga, N.Y., was next with 7,661 pins. There are 10 women in the field.
● The youngest players in the field are 17-year-old Zack Hattori of Las Vegas
and Morgan O’Brien of Lomira, Wis., who earned a chance to bowl with the stars
as 2010 Teen Masters boys and girls champions. Hattori averaged 200.67 to finish
118th in the Chameleon round while O’Brien posted a 2,170 total, good for 231st
place.
