PBA Senior Decatur Open

Decatur’s Bennie Holman, bowling in only his second Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour event, averaged 237 to take the first-round qualifying lead Sunday in the PBA Senior Decatur Open at Spare Time Lanes, Decatur, IL.

Holman, a 51-year-old Archer-Daniels-Midland employee, posted an eight-game total of 1,896 pins to take a 58–pin lead over PBA Hall of Famer Mark Williams
of Beaumont, TX, who won last week’s PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open. Kerry Painter of Henderson, NV, was third with 1,802 pins followed by Dale Traber of Cedarburg, WI, at 1,777 and Hugh Miller of Seattle at 1,776.

“I had a real good day,” said Holman, who bowled his only previous PBA Senior
Tour
event in Decatur a year ago. “My goal was to be plus-200 for the first
round. I got there plus, so that’s a good thing.”

The 110-player field will bowl another eight-game qualifying round on today
after which the field will be cut to the top 32 players who will advance to
best-of-five match play beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m. Match play continues all
day on Tuesday with the Round of 8 and championship rounds scheduled for 6:30
p.m.
