PBA Tour Qualifing Rounds for Viper Championship

In the first event of a Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Qualifying Round (TQR) double-header, former Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exempt player Chad Kloss of Greenfield, WI, was the top qualifier in the Viper Championship TQR Sunday at Thunderbowl Lanes, Allen Park, MI.

Kloss had a 1,575 seven-game pinfall (225 average) to lead a field of 82
non-exempt players competing for 11 spots in the PBA Viper Championship which begins with qualifying Aug. 15.

“Winning this helped a lot mentally,” said the 32-year-old Kloss who had been an exempt player on the PBA Tour the last two seasons. “I’ve been struggling the
last four or five weeks bowling in regionals and have been doing a lot of work
on my equipment and that seems to have helped.”

The Viper Championship is contested on one of the animal-named PBA lane
conditions and is considered one of the Tour’s more challenging lane
conditioning patterns.

“I do much better on lower-scoring lane conditions,” Kloss said. “It seems like I just can’t strike enough on the easier patterns.”

Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., who won yesterday’s Cheetah Championship TQR, showed his versatility on two of PBA’s lane conditions by finishing second with 1,572.

Others advancing to the Viper Championship are: Todd Sim, Canada, 1,540; Steve Rogers, Bourbonnais, Ill., 1,537; Ken Simard, Greenville, S.C., 1,532; Mike Rose, West Henrietta, N.Y., 1,512; Patrick Dombrowski, Parma, Ohio, 1,504; Martin Larsen, Sweden, 1,490; Randy Weiss, Columbia, S.C., 1,487; Bo Goergen,
Midland, Mich., 1,474 and Jeff Zaffino, Warren, Pa., 1,472.

The 72-player Viper Championship field will bowl two seven-game qualifying
rounds on Aug. 15 beginning at 8 a.m., which will determine the 28 players who
will compete in single-elimination best-of-seven game matches on Aug. 16, with
the Round of 8 starting at 7 p.m.

The Viper Championship finals will be taped on Sept. 5 at Thunderbowl and aired on ESPN Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. Eastern.

The PBA will conduct the Chameleon Championship TQR later this afternoon.
