Aussie Bowler in The News

Two-handed Australian pro bowler Jason Belmonte is featured in a front page story in Thursday’s print edition of The Wall Street Journal.

The feature story and video of Belmonte in action is available at wsj.com. Belmonte is currently competing in Fountain Valley, Calif. at the 2009 Dick Weber Open.

The 25-year old pro has won numerous international bowling tournaments in Asia and Europe and is the 2008 World Tenpin Bowler of the Year.

Belmonte is bowling in selected Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowling Association (PBA) Tour events this season looking for his first PBA Tour title.

His best finish was 10th place in the season-opening PBA World Championship in Wichita, Kan. after dominating early qualification rounds.

The Wall Street Journal
article, “Young Australian Puts a New Spin on Bowling: He Throws it Two-Handed” examines the origins of Belmonte’s unorthodox delivery.

After two rounds of qualifying competition in the 2009 Denny’s Dick Weber Open on Wednesday at Fountain Bowl, Belmonte was tied for 10th place.

Belmonte takes to the lanes Thursday afternoon for five games in third round qualifying action. After the third five-game qualification block, the field of 158 bowlers will be cut to the top 24 who will enter match play Thursday evening.

After three rounds of match play, the top five bowlers will advance to Sunday’s live ESPN stepladder finals at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Belmonte is also featured in Thursday’s sports section of the Los Angeles Times with a feature story, “Hands-On Approach.”
