O'Neil - Mr. Consistent - Leads Field for PBA World Championships

The PBA World Series of Bowling is a combination of a series of sprints in the middle of a marathon. While players are trying to finish in the top 16 in each of the five daily 12-game qualifying rounds on five different PBA lane conditioning patterns, the real race is to finish high in the standings after 60 games for the 2010 PBA World Championship, the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour’s first major championship of the 2010-11 season.

Reigning U.S. Open champion Bill O’Neill of Southampton, PA, has demonstrated he isn’t the most talented sprinter, but he’s doing great in the marathon. O’Neill hasn’t won a stage yet, but he has been the most consistent player in the field
of 252, advancing to next week’s match play finals in all four “animal pattern” championships completed thus far: 15th in the Cheetah round, eighth on the Viper pattern, seventh on the Chameleon (where he is defending champion) and 13th in the Scorpion round. That performance has landed him in the lead for the PBA World Championship after 48 of 60 games.

With only Friday’s 12 games on the Shark pattern remaining, O’Neill appears to be a lock for one of the top eight spots in the ESPN/ESPN2 finals, and depending on Friday’s performance, he may remain No. 1 on the list of players who will advance to the live, three-day television finals on ESPN and ESPN2 on Jan. 14, 15 and 16.

After the first 48 games, O’Neill was averaging 228.52 to finish with 10,969 total pins. He held a 30-pin edge over Sean Rash of Wichita, KS. Defending PBA World Champion Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, MI, was in 30th place heading into Friday’s GEICO Shark Championship qualifying round.

Jensen To Forego “Other” World Series To Continue Bowling

Storm Products regional sales representative Tyler Jensen of Fort Worth, Texas, will be around for the second week of the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) World Series of Bowling after all, but at a cost. Jensen, who entered the World Series for a week of vacation and to have fun with his bowling buddies, had no idea he’d finish in the top 16 in any of the five daily events, but he qualified 16th for the Viper Championship match play round and third for the Chameleon Championship. Both match play rounds will be held next week.

Jensen at first said he couldn’t stick around next week, but his boss, Storm Products Vice President-Sales Hank Boomershine, is also bowling in the World Series. After jokingly telling Jensen he was fired because he qualified,
Boomershine reversed his decision Thursday. Well, sort of: “I told Tyler he was fired if he was going to miss work. Now I told him he’s fired if he doesn’t bowl next week,” Boomershine grinned.

“I’m staying to bowl,” Jensen said. “But do you know anyone who wants to buy my World Series tickets for Sunday?” Jensen, a Texas Rangers baseball fan, will be forced to miss his favorite baseball team’s World Series home game to remain in Las Vegas.

PBA Adds $28,000 To GEICO Shark Championship Prize List

Thanks to successful participation in the PBA World Series of Bowling beyond original expectations, the PBA has decided to add an additional $28,000 in prize money to the final stage of qualifying week, the GEICO Shark Championship qualifying round. Instead of paying 16 places, all players finishing in the top 50 during the final 12 games of Week One of the World Series will be rewarded with pay checks.

USA Vs. The World: Finland Paces International Leaders

An additional battle within the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA)'s World Series of Bowling qualifying rounds is a contest for berths in the USA vs. The World special event which will take place on Nov. 6 for delayed airing on ESPN. The top six United States players and the top six international bowlers after 60 games will meet in a one-game team match.

Through Thursday’s Scorpion round, the U.S. contingent consisted of Bill O’Neill, Sean Rash, Chris Barnes, Norm Duke, Brian Kretzer and Michael DeVaney. The international group’s top six after 48 games included Finland’s Mika Koivuniemi, Kimmo Lehtonen and Osku Palermaa; Venezuela’s Amleto Monacelli, Australia’s Jason Belmonte and Sweden’s Martin Larsen.

Australia's Belmonte Tops Scorpion Championship Qualifying

Australia’s Jason Belmonte averaged 237.58 for 12 games to top the Scorpion Championship qualifying round on Thursday, finishing 57 pins ahead of Eugene McCune of Munster, IN.

The top 16 players from Thursday’s Scorpion qualifying round advance to a nine-game round-robin match play round next Tuesday. After 21 games, the top five will advance to the stepladder finals which will be conducted on Friday, Nov. 5, at South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Defending Chameleon champion Bill O’Neill of Southampton, PA, qualified for match play in seventh place, his third straight top 16 finish.

After the first three stages of World Series competition, O’Neill is the only players in the field of 252 who have qualified for match play on the Cheetah, Viper and Chameleon patterns. After three sessions, 38 different players have advanced to next week’s match play rounds.

PBA WORLD SERIES OF BOWLING NOTEBOOK:
● The first two-handed players to advance to match play got it done in the
Chameleon round. Finland’s Osku Palermaa finished second to Malott with 2,757
pins, averaging 229.75, while Australia’s Jason Belmonte posted a 2,702 total
for 12 games to finish the round in ninth place.

● Reigning PBA Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., in his
first competition since undergoing hernia surgery in mid-September, had his best
finish of the PBA World Series in the Chameleon round, finishing 45th in the
Cheetah round and 203rd in the Viper.

● The Howard Stern Show’s “Scott The Engineer” Salem, an avid New Jersey league
bowler making his first appearance in a professional tournament, may be seeing
his hopes of a top 200 finish disappear. But the 58-year-old continues to
improve even as lane conditions become more challenging. On the Wednesday’s
Chameleon lane condition, he averaged 175 on the nose to finish 239th in the
field of 252. Salem’s performances are being covered by HowardTV as well as
Stern’s Sirius Satellite Radio show.

● The leading woman after 36 games was reigning PBA Tournament of Champions
winner Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., with 7,682 pins, 45 pins away from the 63rd
and final cashing position in the World Championship standings. Liz Johnson of
Cheektowaga, N.Y., was next with 7,661 pins. There are 10 women in the field.

● The youngest players in the field are 17-year-old Zack Hattori of Las Vegas
and Morgan O’Brien of Lomira, Wis., who earned a chance to bowl with the stars
as 2010 Teen Masters boys and girls champions. Hattori averaged 200.67 to finish
118th in the Chameleon round while O’Brien posted a 2,170 total, good for 231st
place.

Richie Allen Leads Cheetah Championships

Richie Allen’s professional bowling career was hanging by a thread at the conclusion of the 2009-10 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season, but Monday, he was on top of the world as the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA)’s World Series of Bowling got underway at South Point Bowling Center.

Allen, a 32-year-old two-time PBA Tour champion, averaged 252 for 12 games to top the field of 16 qualifiers who will advance to the Brunswick Pro Bowling

Cheetah Championship match play round next Monday. Allen finished with 3,020 total pins after firing games of 289, 279, 279,
248, 235 and 249 in his second six-game bloc for a 41-pin edge over Lonnie Waliczek of Wichita, KS.

“I have a different mindset now,” Allen said. “My wife (Sarah) got pregnant. It’s our first and we just found out it’s going to be a little girl. I have a lot more on my mind now than bowling. My priorities are different.

“Things mean just as much from a bowling standpoint, but my mind accepts bad breaks differently,” he added. “It’s easier to accept a bad break. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not going to lose the intensity. When I feel it, I’m going try to win. But I’m not going to beat myself up if I get a bad break.

“The Cheetah is not one of my favorite lane conditions,” he continued. “I’m not a fan. I like to hook the ball and normally you need to play straight on the
Cheetah, but today I could hook it. You actually wanted to hook it. There were spots where you had to go around oil, and that’s what I’m pretty good at.

“I figured if I could get through Cheetah, and have a decent day on the Viper condition (Tuesday), maybe I’ll hit my stride later in the week.”

The Brunswick Pro Bowling Cheetah Championship qualifying round was the opening event of the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season, and the first leg in the PBA World Championship. All PBA World Series of Bowling competitors will bowl four more 12-game qualifying rounds on the PBA’s Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark lane conditions over the next four days to complete the 60-game PBA World Championship standings.

While accumulating pins toward the World Championship is a high priority, all players will face a fresh challenge over the next four days. Similar to stages
in the Tour de France, the top 16 players each day will advance to the Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark Championship match play rounds next week.

In week two, the top qualifiers on each pattern will bowl nine additional round-robin match play games with the top five based upon 21 total games
advancing to the stepladder finals.

Bowling fans around the world can follow the daily action live on Xtra Frame, the PBA’s exclusive video-streaming service. Full-year, World Series only and
one-day trial memberships are available by visiting www.xtraframe.tv.

Malott Wins Chameleon Championship Qualifing

Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, won the Chameleon Championship qualifying round Wednesday to make his first match play final as the PBA World Series of Bowling completed its third day at South Point Bowling Center.

Also on Wednesday, Bill O’Neill of Southampton, PA, qualified among the top 16 for the third consecutive day, finishing seventh in the Chameleon round, to take the lead in the PBA World Championship standings after 36 of 60 games.

Malott, after finished 31st in the Cheetah Championship round Monday and 38th in
the Viper Championship qualifying round Tuesday, rolled games of 224, 246, 289,
202, 204 and 237 in his second six-game block Wednesday for a 2,809 12-game
total to top Finland’s two-handed star, Osku Palermaa, by 52 pins.

“We’re into day three and things are starting to fall into place,” Malott, the
2008-09 PBA Player of the Year, said. “For me it’s timing – waiting for the ball
to fall into the swing instead of me pulling it. It’s the thing I’ve been fighting for
the last year and, honestly, it’s just a lack of practice and bowling. I’ve been working
on opening my second pro shop, and I haven’t taken the time to practice. I need to
get my focus back, get into shape and get back into a groove.”

Malott, who failed to win a PBA Tour title last season, has also kept himself in
contention for the top eight PBA World Championship qualifiers who will advance
to the live stepladder finals Jan. 14, 15, and 16. The World Championship
standings will be based on 60 qualifying games, including 12-game rounds on the
Scorpion and Shark lane conditions over the next two days.

“I’m close to making the show,” said Malott, who moved into eighth place in the
World Championship standings. “That’s obviously everyone’s main focus and if you
make a show on one of the stages along the way, that’s an added bonus.”

The top 16 players in each of five “animal pattern” championships will advance
to nine-game match play rounds next week, with the top five in each then
advancing to stepladder finals next Friday and Saturday.

O’Neill, the reigning U.S. Open champion, qualified for next week’s match play
rounds in 15th place in Monday’s Brunswick Pro Bowling Cheetah Championship
round and eighth in Tuesday’s Viper Championship round. He has averaged 230 in
posting an 8,283 pinfall total for 36 games. Sean Rash of Wichita, Kan., is
second with 8,263 pins. The top 63 in the PBA World Championship standings will
cash, and the top eight will advance to the live ESPN/ESPN2 stepladder finals
Jan. 14, 15 and 16 at South Point.

Bowling fans around the world are following the action on Xtra Frame, the PBA’s
exclusive video-streaming service. Full-year, World Series only and one-day
trial memberships are available by visiting www.xtraframe.tv.

Former MISS USA Kimberly Pressler To Be PBA World Series Sideline Reporter

Kimberly Pressler, who first gained fame as Miss USA 1999 and since has gained
international recognition as one of television’s most sought-after television
sideline reporters, will join the ESPN television crew as a reporter on the PBA
World Series of Bowling telecasts from South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

Pressler, who once worked for the U.S. Department of Energy at a nuclear power
plant, has hosted television programs for ABC, MTV, ESPN, Fox Sports, NBC and
the Speed Network. She has covered events ranging from the ACIS Fitness National
Championships to the Traxxas TORC truck racing series, from the Red Bull
X-Fighters series to the X-Games.

“Kimberly will bring another special touch to our World Series shows emanating from Las Vegas,”
said PBA COO and Deputy Commissioner Tom Clark. “The World Series of Bowling has grown extremely
fast and has sponsors, fans and players excited about the possibilities. Kimberly will help Rob Stone
and Randy Pedersen bring bowling’s ultimate festival to life on ESPN.”

"It'll great to be part of ESPN's coverage of the World Series of Bowling,” Pressler said. “Even though
I'm new to the sport, this is a very special event for the PBA and its fans, and I'm looking forward to
being part of it."

Finns Top Viper Championships

Finland’s Kimmo Lehtonen overtook countryman Mika Koivuniemi by a single pin Tuesday night to win the Viper
Championship
qualifying round the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA)’s World Series of Bowling at
South Point Bowling Center.

Lehtonen averaged 250 for his second six-game bloc Tuesday to slip past Koivuniemi, an eight-time PBA Tour
champion. Both averaged 234 for 12 games to top the field of 16 qualifiers who will advance to the Viper
Championship
match play round next Monday. Lehtonen, a long-time member of Team Finland and winner
of 30 international medals during a career that began in 1985, finished with 2,818 total pins to lead the
second leg in the PBA World Championship.

After 24 games, the PBA World Championship leader was Cheetah Championship qualifying winner Ritchie
Allen of Columbia, SC, with a total of 5,715 pins, 91 better than Lonnie Waliczek of Wichita, KS.

“It’s a marathon. There are still three more days,” Allen said. “I’m definitely not getting ahead of myself. The
lanes were real difficult tonight, but my balls seems to want to knock them down right now and if I can keep
making cuts, good things will happen.”

The Viper Championship qualifying round was the second of five qualifying stages within the PBA World
Championship
. All PBA World Series of Bowling competitors will bowl three more 12-game qualifying rounds
on the PBA’s Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark lane conditions over the next three days to complete the
60-game PBA World Championship standings.

Lehtonen said the difference between bowling on a freshly-oiled condition in the six-game morning block
compared to an evening condition that had been broken down by the previous squad – commonly called
a “burned condition” – was “not so many open frames. In the morning, I had a lot more open frames.
Too many splits.”

He also had high praise for Koivuniemi (“Mika is my best friend”), a long-time Team Finland teammate even
though Koivuniemi currently lives in Hartland, MI.

“Mika has coached me for many, many years. Every time I want to learn something new, I take a flight
to see him and live in his home. One year he changed me from a crouched stance and a five-step
approach to an upright stance with six steps. Two months later, I won the European Championship.”

Lehtonen, a left-hander, decided to bowl in the World Series “because I’m hungry to learn something
new and the best players in the world are here in the United States. The World Series is five different lane
conditions. That’s something new for me. I’ve played some tournaments in the U.S. before, but now my plan
is I’m going to bowl all the tournaments I can this year.”

Bowling fans around the world can follow the daily action live on Xtra Frame, the PBA’s exclusive video-
streaming service. Full-year, World Series only and one-day trial memberships are available by visiting

54th Annual Military Championships Entries Strong

The 54th Annual Military Bowling Championships event, sponsored in part by Storm Bowling Products,  features 6-player Team, Doubles and Singles.  There are optional Sweepers and a Mixed Doubles event as well. Entry fee is $160 per person which includes Team, Doubles, Singles & All-Events

Since the field has filled in 2 of the past 3 years, more teams than normal have already registered for the 54th Annual Military Bowling Championships.  In fact, there are 110 teams already entered and confirmed, way above last years's team count on this date.

If you are looking to get on a team, this is a great time to contact tournament organizers as several teams need a player in all 3 divisions: Active Duty, Retired and Senior Retired (age 60 & over). Call us at 1-800-257-6179 or email info@high-roller.com.

If you are eligible but have never bowler the event, you might know it under different names such as Worldwide Military or Armed Forces Military Bowling but it is the same event that Nellis AFB,  Showboat & Castaways hosted for years!

The brochure is online, available to view and print!  Visit the brand new website www.militarybowlingchampionships.com or www.high-roller.com to sneak a peak at the 2011 event.

The dates are January 16 - 20 with the Breakfast Awards Party on Friday, January 21.

There are fabulous Early Bird room rates that the host Gold Coast & Orleans Hotels have offered!  Call them toll free at 1-888-402-6278.

Tournament organizers announced that for the 2nd year, we will be working with the Bowler To Veterans Link ( BVL). $1 per contestant will be donated to that organization and High Roller, management team of the MBC will match those funds to double the donation. As MBC Tournament Committee member Ron Mercer said, "It's a great idea that we give a little back to those who probably aren't able to do what we do!" Visit them at http://www.bowlforveterans.org/.
