EJ Tackett Converts Break into Second Career PBA Tour Title in PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open

CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. – EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., broke up a 7-9 split, converting the break into a string of three strikes that proved to be the difference in winning his second career PBA Tour title Sunday in the PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open at Liberty Lanes.

Tackett, the 2013 PBA Rookie of the Year, defeated top qualifier Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 217-210, to win the $10,000 first prize after eliminating PBA Regional veteran Steven Taylor of Deer Creek, Ill., in the semifinal match.

“They say winning your second title is the toughest,” said Tackett, who won his first PBA Tour title in the 2015 PBA Xtra Frame Lubbock Sports Open. “But I’ve been close and I’ve been bowling well. Maybe this will lead to something more."

“I really didn’t think I could bowl enough to beat Ryan; I thought it would take 250 to win,” Tackett said. “I got fortunate that he didn’t bowl a good game because that’s really uncharacteristic of how he’s been bowling.”

Ciminelli’s closing string of four strikes forced Tackett to mark in the 10th frame on the lane that was giving him difficulty.

“I liked the first shot,” he said, despite leaving a 4 pin. “I guess, being in the situation, I probably threw it a little hard, but the result was good. I was a little nervous on that (4 pin) spare, just because I’d missed one in match play earlier – against Ryan, actually.”

Taylor’s “Cinderella” bid for his first PBA Tour title, in only his second PBA Tour event after bowling in 103 regionals, came to an end with a 205-200 loss to Tackett in the semifinal match. Tackett threw one double and converted six single-pin spares, but Taylor threw one too many splits.

Taylor, an 11-year PBA Midwest Region competitor with three regional titles, rallied from an early 29-pin deficit with a string of six strikes to eliminate Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., 237-209, in the first stepladder match. The 40-year-old right-hander then watched 14-time PBA Tour titlist Patrick Allen of Mount Kisco, N.Y., start with five strikes, rolling into an early 33-pin lead, before throwing eight strikes in his last nine attempts for a 246-212 victory. Allen left a pocket 7-10 in the seventh frame and then saw his titles hopes disappear when he left and failed to convert the 3-7-9 split in the ninth frame.

The PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open is the second of 10 Xtra Frame events that will pay the PBA member with the highest points total at the conclusion of the series a $10,000 bonus. Tackett said his plan is to bowl the entire Xtra Frame series."

The series rewards good bowling, it rewards consistency on different patterns,” Tackett said. “They’re not just handing out titles and with a $10,000 bonus at the end, it’s worth going after.”

PBA Tournament of Champions Rescheduled

The 2014 Professional Bowlers Association Barbasol Tournament of Champions will move to Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, MI, beginning Jan. 18 and concluding with a live ESPN telecast at noon ET on Sunday, Jan. 26, the PBA announced.

 

The change in venue and dates for the 49th TOC from previously announced April in Indianapolis is accompanied by a revised PBA League competition and ESPN air-date schedule. 

 

The 2014 PBA Tournament of Champions will be open to any PBA member who has ever won a PBA Tour, International Tour, PBA50, PBA Women’s Series or PBA Regional title. The PBA champions will compete in a 49-game qualifying and match play format with the top five players advancing to the stepladder finals.

 

The Tournament of Champions was first held in 1962 in Indianapolis as a showcase tournament for the elite players who had won PBA national titles. In April 2013, in its return to Indianapolis, PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, MO, at age 50, became the oldest TOC winner when he defeated Australia’s Jason Belmonte, 224-179, to win the title for the second time. With his win, Weber also tied bowling legend Earl Anthony for most PBA major titles (10) and he became the first player ever to complete the PBA Triple Crown (TOC, U.S. Open and PBA World Championship) twice.

The PBA League season on ESPN kicks off with the Chris Paul PBA League All-Stars on Sunday, Feb. 2, with the first week of quarterfinal action in the eight-team bracket airing Feb. 9. Each match in the eight-team bracket seen on ESPN will feature singles, doubles, trios and five-player Baker-format games. The final two teams will advance to the PBA League Elias Cup Finals which will be held in North Brunswick, NJ. The final will air on ESPN on April 13.

 

The PBA League, in its second year, features eight teams of five PBA stars each, representing different cities and prominent team owners from the sports and entertainment worlds. The New York City WTT KingPins, owned by tennis legend Billie Jean King, are defending champions. Other teams include the Motown Muscle (owner Jerome Bettis), Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits (owner LaMarr Woodley), Silver Lake Atom Splitters (owner Chris Hardwick), Philadelphia Hitmen (owner Kevin Hart), L.A. Xtra Frame Resumes Live Coverage with PBA Senior Dayton Classic

Live Xtra Frame programming returns May 15-17 with coverage of the PBA Senior Dayton Classic presented by Roto Grip from Capri Lanes in Dayton, Ohio.

Xtra Frame, the PBA’s exclusive online bowling channel, will cover qualifying rounds at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, and Wednesday, May 16, along with full coverage of round-robin match play rounds on Thursday at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., leading into the four-player stepladder finals at 7 p.m. All times are Eastern.

Duke Wins 36th Title at Dick Weber PBA Playoffs

Norm Duke of Clermont, FL, won a hall of fame strikefest with Parker Bohn III of Jackson, NJ, Sunday night to win the Dick Weber Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Playoffs presented by Hammer at Woodland Bowl and secure his 36th career title, third best in PBA Tour history.

Duke’s third victory of the 2010-11 season also put him into the thick of the PBA Player of the Year race with only the PBA Tournament of Champions (TOC) remaining on the schedule. The TOC will be conducted April 9-15 at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas.

Duke put on a stunning performance Sunday, including his 836-766 victory over Bohn, a 32-time PBA Tour title and a fellow PBA Hall of Famer.

“If you would have told me this morning I would shoot 800 in the title match, I’d have said I was going to win the title,” Duke said, “but I wouldn’t have believed it.”

Just like he had done in three previous elimination rounds, Duke started his match against Bohn with nine strikes for a 289 game and a 60-pin lead with two games to go. It was too much for Bohn to overcome, even though he answered with games of 279 and 258 for his 766 series. Duke followed his 289 with games of 268 and 279.

“That was a match people are going to remember for awhile,” Bohn said.

Duke, a two-time PBA Player of the Year, will take his bid for a third honorary title into the Tournament of Champions, a tournament he last won in 1994.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve won the TOC, but I’d like to do something about that,” Duke said. “It’s a very, very difficult tournament to win, but I’ve been training hard and I live for the majors. I’m ready.”

Four other contenders in the PBA Player of the Year race – two-time 2011-12 title winners Jason Belmonte of Australia, Osku Palermaa of Finland and Mike Fagan of Dallas along with five-time U.S. Open champion Pete Weber of St. Ann, MO – were eliminated earlier Sunday.

Duke’s march to the title match began in the Regional Championships round when he struck on 17 of his first 19 shots, racing away from Michael Haugen Jr. of Carefree, AZ, to win the Southwest Region championship, 792-616.

In the Conference Championship round he defeated Bryon Smith of Roseburg, OR, 751-657, and he advanced to the championship match with a 789 series in the semifinal round. Bohn won the second spot in the title match with a 632 series, edging Sweden’s Martin Larsen by 14 pins.

With his 37 career title, Duke broke a tie with Pete Weber for third on the PBA Tour titles list. Walter Ray Williams Jr. is the all-time leader with 47 titles and the late Earl Anthony is second with 43.

The PBA playoffs involved six groups of PBA Tour, Senior Tour and regional players bowling a series of elimination rounds. Champions from six Regional groups advanced through Regional and Conference Championship rounds leading up to the semifinals and championship rounds. All rounds of the final Xtra Frame Tour event of the season were webcast live on the PBA’s exclusive online bowling channel, Xtra Frame.

PBA Chameleon Open Sunday at 3 p.m. ET

This Sunday on ESPN: PBA Chameleon Open at 3 p.m. ET. from the South Point Bowling Center, Las Vegas. The PBA Chameleon Open is the second of four PBA “animal pattern” championships conducted during the World Series of Bowling.  
Four finalists will bowl a one-game match. The player with the lowest score will be eliminated. The three survivors will bowl another game, with the low man ousted. The two finalists will then bowl a final game for the title. 

Sean Rash, who qualified for the ESPN finals in a record six PBA World Series of Bowling events, will meet two-handed rivals Jason Belmonte of Australia and Osku Palermaa of Finland in the Chameleon Open finals Sunday on ESPN. Rounding out the field of four will be Venezuelan Ildemaro Ruiz, making his third career PBA television appearance. 

Rash, a four-time PBA Tour champion who is trying for his first title since the 2007 USBC Masters, will try to derail the two international two-handed stars who finished one-two in Chameleon Open qualifying. Belmonte averaged 236.29 to pace the Chameleon field with Palermaa averaging at a 235.14 pace. Rash was another 25 pins behind Palermaa while Ruiz qualified fourth for the four-man eliminator format finals. 

Belmonte, the 2008-09 PBA Rookie of the Year, is trying for his second career title. He won his only Tour title in the 2009 Bowling Foundation Long Island Open. In the meantime, Palermaa has won twice including the 2012 PBA World Championship. Ruiz is trying for his first PBA title. 

In their only two previous meetings in PBA Tour televised competition, Palermaa is 2-0 vs. Belmonte. Palermaa defeated Belmonte, 182-176, in the 2010 GEICO Shark Championship semifinal match and he nipped the Aussie, 10-6, in a one-ball rolloff after they tied at 203-203 in round one of the PBA World Championship elimination finals, knocking Belmonte out of title contention in that event. 

Last Season: Rookie Scott Norton of Costa Mesa, CA, started the title match at the South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas with eight strikes before converting a 4-7 spare in the eighth frame to defeat Sean Rash of Wichita, KS, 256-181. Rash had won three consecutive matches to reach the championship contest.

Texan Castillo Leads the PBA Cheetah Open

Dino Castillo of Carrollton, Texas, bowled two 300 games and averaged 257.33 Saturday to lead qualifying in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Cheetah Open presented by Ebonite at Fountain Bowl. 

Castillo had games of 300, 258, 256, 279, 238, 235, 192, 300 and 258 for a 2,316 nine-game pinfall total on the high-scoring PBA Cheetah lane conditioning pattern to top 24 players who advanced to Sunday morning’s match play round. In all, 13 300 games were bowled in Saturday’s qualifying. 

“It’s a high-scoring pace, of course, which means you really have to concentrate on staying one step ahead.” said Castillo, who has a previous best PBA Tour finish of second that came in the 2010 Japan Cup. 

“Your concentration really has to focus on not just hitting the pocket but getting the ball through the pins. “For me that requires getting the ball to go right on the lane so I can get the best angle to the pocket,” he added. “I tried so hard to do that a couple of times I threw it in the gutter—I guess I tried too hard.” 

Castillo finished 21 pins ahead of PBA Hall of Famer and 34-time Tour titlist Norm Duke of Clermont, FL, in second with 2,295. Rounding out the top five were Josh Blanchard, Gilbert, AZ, 2,273; defending Cheetah Open champion Eugene McCune, Munster, IN, 2,268, and two-time Tour winner Michael Haugen Jr., Carefree, AZ, 2,257. 

The landmark Cheetah Open is the first PBA Tour event to be streamed live exclusively on PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel. Three more Xtra Frame events are scheduled during the remainder of the season. 

After Sunday morning’s match play round, the field will be cut to the top four players who will compete in a stepladder final at 9 p.m. ET.
