Second Stage of PBA Million Dollar Tournament of Champions Begins

After the completion of the Champions Field elimination round Monday afternoon, 50 players advanced to the start of Elite Field qualifying in the 46th Professional Bowlers Association (PBA)Tournament of Champions (TOC) at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas, NV.

The Champions Field included players who have won four or fewer Lumber 
Liquidators PBA Tour titles or a PBA Regional, PBA Women’s Series, PBA Senior 
Tour or PBA Senior Regional title. The top half of the Champions Field after 14 
games joined the Elite players, including multiple PBA Tour title winners, Hall 
of Famers and Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exempt players for the balance of the 
record $1 million tournament.

Among the notable players advancing were two-hander Osku Palermaa of Finland, 
who finished the round tied for 12th with a 3,016 (215.4 average) 14-game 
pinfall. Palermaa finished fourth in the PBA World Championship Sunday and won 
his first PBA Tour title last November in the PBA GEICO Shark Championship.
Brian Ziesig, who became the only amateur to win a standard Lumber Liquidators 
PBA Tour title last season by winning the Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship, 
advanced as the No. 19 qualifier.

Diandra Asbaty of Chicago finished 24th to lead four women who advanced from the 
Champions field. Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, NY, finished 29th, Carolyn 
Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, tied for 32nd and Missy Parkin of Lake Forest, 
CA, finished tied for 43rd. They will join defending champion Kelly Kulick 
of Union, NJ, in the Elite Field.
 
Former Touring player Tim Mack, of Indianapolis, who won a regional title in 
November to become eligible for the Tournament of Champions, topped the 
100-player Champions Field with a 3,178 pinfall total, a 227 average.
Corey Husted of Milwaukie, Ore., the son of PBA Hall of Famer Dave Husted, 
earned the 50th and final Elite Field berth in a one-game roll-off, tossing a 
257 game in defeating Mark Heller, Allentown, PA (224) and Kurt Gengelbach, 
Carrollton, Texas (215).
 
The combined Elite Field begins qualifying Monday at 4 p.m. Pacific. All bowlers 
will bowl 20 games in four five-game blocks over three days to determine the top 
53 who will advance into the Cashers Round.
 
After two seven-game blocks in the Cashers Round, the top 24 based on 36 total 
games will advance to a traditional 24 games of round-robin match play. At the 
conclusion of match play, the top four will advance to the ABC stepladder finals 
on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern.
