Kulick Back To Work at PBA Doubles Event in Colorado

After her historic win in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tournament of Champions two weeks ago, Kelly Kulick of Union, NJ, will return to competition in the Bayer Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles at Brunswick Zone Wheat Ridge in Wheat Ridge, Colo. Feb 16-21.

Kulick became the first woman to win a Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour event by defeating Chris Barnes, 265-195, in the title match of the PBA Tournament of Champions, one of the Tour’s four major championships.

“It’s been a dream of mine to win a PBA Tour event but I couldn’t have imagined
it would have come in the Tournament of Champions,” said the 32-year-old
right-hander after her victory.

Kulick was the second woman to bowl for a PBA Tour title, but the first - Liz
Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y. – lost her bid against Tommy Jones in the 2005
Banquet Open. Both women will be on hand for the Bayer Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles, and both will come to town with high expectations.

Kulick, who has been dealing with a national media whirlwind since her
Tournament of Champions win, is eager to step out of the spotlight and get back to business.

“It’s been pretty hectic but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” Kulick said. “But
I can’t wait until I get back on the lanes again where I do what I do best.”

She will be after her third PBA Women’s Series title of the 2009-10 season.
During the PBA World Series of Bowling in Detroit last August, Kulick won a pair
of PBA Women’s Series presented by BOWL.COM titles – the PBA women’s Shark Championship and the inaugural PBA Women’s World Championship, which gave her the first berth ever for a woman in the PBA Tournament of Champions. She converted that opportunity into a historic victory against a field of 62 male PBA champions.

Johnson will arrive in Colorado as defending Mixed Doubles champion. She and
Norm Duke won the 2009 Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles in Reno, NV, but if she wins again, it’ll be with a different partner. Duke, who has been nursing an injured ankle, has withdrawn from the Mixed Doubles.

Despite their recent successes, there is no guarantee Kulick or Johnson will
even make the match play finals field in Wheat Ridge. A field of the 32 of the
best women bowlers in the world will be on hand for the final PBA Women’s Series presented by BOWL.COM event of the season, and those 32 will compete for 16 spots in the match play finals where they will be paired with the top 16 qualifiers from the field of 64 men.

The unique mixed doubles format requires PBA Tour male players and PBA Women’s Series players to compete in separate 14-game qualifying rounds. Based on their qualifying ranking, the top 16 men and top 16 women will be paired together to compete in match play. After 16 head-to-head doubles matches, the top five teams will advance to the stepladder finals. The finals format will use the Baker Format where each player will bowl five alternate frames to combine for one score.

The Bayer Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles finals will be televised live by
ESPN at 1 p.m. Eastern (11 a.m. Mountain) on Sunday, Feb. 21.

Voss Leads After Round One of the USBC Masters

Five days ago, before one of the biggest tournaments of the year, Brian Voss of Alpharetta, GA, decided to make a physical change to his game to help him keep up with the "young guys."

Voss, 51, proved Tuesday night that the change to his timing paid off as he fired 1,242 for five games, an average of 248.4, to take the lead after the opening round of the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Masters at the National Bowling Stadium.

"I had to make a change to my timing if I wanted to keep up with all these young guys," said Voss, a PBA Hall of Famer and 24-time champion. "I worked on getting the ball into the swing a little sooner. All my career, I've had to adapt to the eras of bowling, and this era is different. You can't keep up with these guys unless you have ball speed."

Voss started his opening round with games of 277, 258 and 269 for an 804 series before closing with games of 212 and 226. He leads Jeff Carter of Springfield, IL, by 27 pins.

"It's a good start," Voss said. "I was able to get left of the oil line and there was some margin for error there. I just bowled good and was clean the entire block."

Eugene McCune of Munster, IN, took the lead after the opening day but sat in third with 1,214 after round one. McCune said his game plan for the day blew up as soon as he threw his first shot Tuesday.

"During practice yesterday, I had a good look playing outside, but when I came in today, I didn't have the same look," said McCune, who finished sixth at the PBA One A Day Dick Weber Open two weeks ago. "Sometimes you just have to make a guess, hope that it's right and then execute. I moved way inside and threw the ball well."

All 267 players will return Wednesday for five games of qualifying before the field is cut to the top 67 for five final games of qualifying Thursday morning. The top 63 will join defending champion John Nolen in the double-elimination match-play bracket Thursday afternoon.

Chris Paul and Jason Belmonte Win Charity Event

New Orleans Hornets All-Star point guard Chris Paul has made plenty of clutch shots during his basketball career, but in his bowling experiences, he had never thrown a bigger strike than the one he rolled in helping partner Jason Belmonte rally their team to victory in the Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational at Riverboat Lanes on the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base.

Fagan Wins PBA One A Day Dick Weber Open

In his eighth season on the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour, Mike Fagan of Patchogue, NY, finally won his first individual Tour title in the PBA One A Day Dick Weber Open Sunday at Fountain Bowl.

It was an especially memorable win for Fagan as he defeated PBA Hall of Famer and all-time win leader Walter Ray Williams Jr. 241-213 in the championship match to earn the $25,000 first prize.

It was just a year ago that Fagan finished second in the Dick Weber Open after losing to another bowling great, Hall of Famer Norm Duke 278-168 in the championship match.

“I think I learned a lot from that experience last year,” the 29-year-old Fagan said. “The key for me was just to bowl the way I know I can and the results will take care of themselves.”

Fagan’s only other Tour title was the PBA Exempt Doubles Classic with partner Danny Wiseman in the 2007-08 season.

“I’ve had a lot of experience bowling on TV so I knew it would be just a matter of time before I got another win,” Fagan said. “If I have a weakness bowling on TV, it’s probably not always selecting the right equipment, but I made the right decisions today.”

For Williams, who was trying for his 47th title, it was a matter of pin carry. He earned $13,000 for second. “I just didn’t have the carry and Mike did,” said the 50-year-old Williams, “but he had a better angle to the pocket and he bowled a great game—it would have been tough to beat that.”

In the semifinal stepladder match, Williams defeated Hall of Famer Pete Weber 234-178 to advance to the championship match. Weber, who ranks in a tie with Mark Roth for third in all-time Tour wins with 34, finished third for the second consecutive year in the tournament named after his legendary father.

In the second match Weber defeated fourth-place finisher Bill O’Neill 214-202, and in the opening match O’Neill, who won his first Tour title earlier this season, defeated four-time Tour titlist Ryan Shafer 226-200 who finished fifth.

The Dick Weber Open featured the traditional open qualifying format used in the PBA’s early years with 15 games of qualifying determining the top 24 advancing to three eight-game blocks of round-robin match play. The top five players after match play advanced to the stepladder finals.
