United States Bowling Congress reported 2,482,785 members for the just completed 2007-08 season, down from the 2,608,279 of the prior season (a 4.8% drop).
In contrast, Sport Bowling league membership was up 13%, accompanied by a rise in 2007-08 honor scores.
The above drop coincides with a 2% decline in the number of bowling centers from the prior year with USBC certifying 5,443 centers and 113,041 lanes in the U.S., Puerto Rico and on U.S. military bases. The average lanes-per-center is 20.67. PA had the most centers with 378 while MI had the most lanes with 8,060. WI was second in centers with 362 followed by MI with 353, NY with 339 and OH with 331. Following MI in lanes were NY (7,303), OH (7,290), CA (6,614) and IL (6,456).
