Cook, a 15-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour champion looking for his first Senior Tour win, had games of 277, 234, 204, 245, 258, 246, 253 and 268 to hold an 11-pin lead over Charlie Tapp of Kalamazoo, Mich., in second .
The 52-year-old Cook had competed in an occasional Senior Tour stop last season but plans to compete in several more stops during the 2009 season thanks to a conditioning program and successful physical therapy for his ailing legs. At 6 feet, seven inches and more than 260 pounds, Cook was one of the biggest competitors ever to compete on the PBA Tour.
“I’ve always felt competitive but it’s just a matter of how well my legs hold up,” said the left-hander who has also recently lost 30 pounds. “I’ve been working with a trainer and have had a lot of physical therapy so I feel I can bowl more and be competitive.
“I just need to pick up tomorrow where I left off today,” Cook added. “My goal is to finish in the top eight after tomorrow so I can take advantage of having two byes in match play and that will help the stress on my legs.”
Kerry Painter of Henderson, Nev., who qualified 11th after the first round with 1,925 finished his block with games of 299 and 300.
The full field of 151 players will bowl one more eight-game qualifying round Monday before the field will be cut to the top 32 qualifiers for match play rounds on Tuesday. Match play begins with the round of 32 on Tuesday which will feature players who qualified 17th-32nd. Bowlers qualifying 9th-16th will receive one bye and those qualifying in the top eight will receive two byes. The Round of 8, semi-final and championship matches are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday.
