Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, trying for his third Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) major
title, took the second round lead in the PBA World Championship at Thunderbowl Lanes Tuesday.
First round leaders Kelly Kulick of Union, NJ, and Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, retained their leads
in the PBA Women’s and Senior World Championships respectively.
Scroggins, who was fourth after the first round, averaged 236.92 to a 12-game total of 2,843 pins
and a 36-pin lead over Sean Rash of Wichita, Kan., who finished with a total of 2,807 pins. Tommy
Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., was third, seven pins behind Rash.
“I tend to do better when I’m not in the lead,” said Scroggins, who won the 2005 USBC Masters and
2009 U.S. Open titles, “but I’d definitely like to be in the lead after the next 10 or 12 games.
“I had the left side of the lane all to myself until two games to go,” the 35-year-old left-hander
added, “and that made a big difference. Once I get lined up, I get comfortable and stay focused and
make good shots. When I get in trouble is when I have to start fishing around.”
Kulick, who is trying for her first PBA Women’s Series presented by BOWL.COM title, maintained a
240.67 average clip for a 2,888 12-game total and a 100-pin lead over Shannon Pluhowsky of Phoenix.
"It seemed like yesterday was the reverse of today,” Kulick said. “Monday the higher scores seemed
to be on the fresh condition and today I was doing better when the lanes were burnt, and that made
ball selection very important.
"One thing I do is pay a lot of attention to the other players' ball reactions and where they play the
lanes,” she added, “so I'm always looking ahead to the next pair to prepare for what I need to do."
Mohr, the PBA Senior Tour’s only three-time winner this season, finished with 2,727, but had to rally
in the final game to regain the lead over second-year Senior Tour player Bob Harvey of Boise, Idaho,
who finished with 2,719 pins.
“Any time you bowl over par (a 200 average), it’s fun, especially on demanding lane conditions like
this,” Harvey said. “One of the guys said it’s much more fun to sit on top of the hill and look down
than it is to be at the bottom looking up.”
Harvey joined the Senior Tour in 2008 as another victim of the economic downturn, and teamed up
with Kulick to win his only title in the PBA Ladies and Legends tournament in Rockford, Ill., which
was only the second PBA Tour event he had ever entered.
“I owned a bowling center, lost my lease and had to close it,” he said. “I always wanted to try the
Senior Tour, so my wife and I bought a motor home, and now we travel and I bowl. I got a lemon in
my life and made some lemonade.”
All players in the three PBA World Championship events will bowl one more six-game qualifying
round Wednesday. After a six-game semifinal round Thursday morning, the top 40 men, top 20 seniors
and top 20 women will advance to best-of-seven-game, single-elimination match play Thursday night
and Friday. The Women’s and Senior World Championship title matches will be contested
Saturday at noon for delayed telecast on ESPN. The men’s finals will be contested live on ESPN on
Dec. 13 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kan.
