Chicago’s Billy Oatman led the Tour Qualifying Round (TQR), which qualified
nine players to advance into the exempt field of 64 for the Professional Bowlers
Association (PBA) Etonic Don Johnson Eliminator Tuesday. Tournament play
gets underway Thursday at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus, OH.
Oatman, the 2006-07 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour Rookie of the Year,
averaged 230.75 to finish the eight-game qualifying round with 1,846 pins, two
pins ahead of Jesse Buss, Wichita, Kan. Also advancing to the field of 64 were
Eddie Graham, Centerville, Ohio, 1,801; Scott Newell, Deland, Fla., 1,793; Joe
Bailey, Doylestown, Ohio, 1,768; Anthony LaCaze, Melrose Park, Ill., 1,751; Chad
Kloss, West Allis, Wis., 1,749; Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y., 1,747, and
Andres Gomez, Colombia, 1,739.
For Johnson, it was the ninth time since the PBA opened its membership to
women in 2004 that she has advanced out of the TQR into the tournament proper.
Overall, including open field events where pre-tournament qualifying isn’t required,
Johnson will be bowling in her 45th PBA Tour event.
The Etonic Don Johnson Eliminator officially gets underway Thursday with two
seven-game qualifying rounds at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern. After 14 games, the
top 30 will advance to two more seven-game rounds at the same times on Friday.
The field will then be trimmed to the top 16 players who will be seeded into
four groups of four for Saturday’s Eliminator Rounds.
In the Eliminator rounds, the bowler with the lowest three-game, total pinfall
score will be eliminated. After three rounds, the surviving player in each of
the four groups will advance to Sunday’s live ESPN finals starting at 2 p.m.
Eastern. In three televised rounds, the player with the lowest game bowled will
be eliminated until the champion is decided.
