International players continued to make an impact at
the World Series of Bowling as Dom Barrett of
England earned top-qualifier honors in the PBA
Scorpion Open Monday at the South Point Bowling Center.
Barrett bowled a 3,264 14-game pinfall total (233.1 average) with the help of a
1,453 six-game block on games of 248, 277, 210, 241, 178 and 299 in the final
round.
Barrett will be joined by PBA Tour titlist Dave Wodka of Henderson, NV,
four-time Tour titlist Sean Rash of Montgomery, IL. and 13-time Tour winner
Patrick Allen of Baltimore in the Scorpion Open ESPN Eliiminator finals which
will be taped at 6 p.m. PT on Nov. 18.
Barrett, who currently ranks fifth on the European Bowling Tour points list, won
his first PBA title in a regional tournament in Reno last weekend on his way to
the World Series.
“I came here to win one of these tournaments,” said Barrett, who is also third
in PBA World Championship qualifying. “Winning the regional gave me a lot of
confidence. This is going to be my first (PBA) show and I couldn’t be happier.
“The key to my success so far has been taking advantage of every minute of
practice time I’ve had since I’ve been here to work on everything from making
adjustments to selecting the right ball.”
Rash earned his third straight television final, and fortified his lead after
24 games of PBA World Championship qualifying.
Rash, who has already qualified for the ESPN televised finals of the Bayer Viper
Open and Chameleon Open, had a 1,870 eight-game pinfall (233.7 average) in the
morning qualifying round.
“Having already made two TV shows helps loosen up your arm swing,” he added.
“I’ve bowled well in all three World Series events and the All-In Showdown. All
you ever want to do is give yourself a chance to win. If you give yourself
enough chances, you’ll win and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
With the conclusion of Monday’s eight-game Scorpion qualifying round, the fourth
and final animal pattern is tomorrow’s GEICO Shark Open. After the Shark round,
the top 53 players based on 32 games will advance to Wednesday’s eight-game PBA
World Championship cashers round. After a total of 40 games, the top 16 players
will advance to the ESPN-televised elimination finals in the first PBA major
championship of the season.
