2023 PBA50 (AND PBA60) NATIONAL TOUR SCHEDULE

The 2023 PBA50 Tour schedule will feature the greatest bowlers in the world aged 50-and-over competing in 12 title events, including five major championships, from early June to the end of August, with a total purse of more than $1 million.

The Professional Bowlers Association also announced fans will be able watch every PBA50 Tour event start-to-finish, livestreamed on BowlTV.

Highlighting the season will be the first-ever PBA50 World Series of Bowling, at JAX60 in Jackson, Mich., July 15-23. The inaugural senior WSOB will feature four title events including the main-event PBA50 World Championship, which will boast a first-place prize of $25,000, the highest on the senior circuit in more than two decades.

Similar to the PBA Tour’s World Series, the PBA50 WSOB will have multiple oil pattern championship stages leading to the World Championship. 

Another exciting addition to the schedule finds the 2023 PBA50 Tour season concluding with the return of the PBA50 Tournament of Champions (TOC), at Orange Bowl Lanes in Lakeland, Fla., Aug. 26-30. Back for the first time this century, the PBA50 TOC and its $15,000 winner’s check will be open to PBA champions over the age of 50 who have won a PBA title of any kind in their careers from the PBA Tour and PBA50 Tour, including PBA and PBA50 Regional Tour titles.

Last season, legendary PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III earned PBA50 Player of the Year honors, winning four titles and leading the Tour in points and earnings.

Lennie Boresch Jr. won the 2022 Senior U.S. Open, and the victory earned the 10-year PBA50 Tour veteran eligibility into the PBA Hall of Fame, based on his senior Tour accomplishments. Boresch was elected to the HOF by vote and will be inducted in March. 

Andres Gomez, the first Colombian to win a PBA Tour title, will cross the age 50 threshold on July 19, and is expected to compete.

In addition to Bohn and Boresch, PBA Hall of Famers Walter Ray Williams Jr., Chris Barnes, Pete Weber, Jason Couch, Amleto Monacelli, Ron Mohr, Tom Baker and Johnny Petraglia once again figure to be regulars on the PBA50 Tour.

Rounding out the major championships on the 2023 PBA50 Tour schedule are the USBC Senior Masters at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas, the Senior U.S. Open at Highland Park Lanes in Greeley, Colo. and the PBA50 Players Championship at Bowl America Dranesville in Virginia. The Players Championship finals and its record-high $20,000 first place prize will be contested on specially-installed lanes at the home of PBA50 player Bill Moore.

Other cities hosting 2023 PBA50 Tour regular events include Hammond, Ind., Morgantown, W.Va., The Villages, Fla., and Fort Myers, Fla.

The PBA50 Tour schedule will also allow for players to participate in the new PBA LBC National Championships at Bowlero Wauwatosa in Milwaukee, Wis. Depending on which division the PBA50 players choose to enter, the National Championships have a $25,000 first-place prize in the Open Classic division, and $5,000 first in the Men’s Senior Classic division. The top three finishers in the Open Classic division and winner of the men’s Senior Classic division will join winners in other divisions earning trips to the FOX Sports presentation of the PBA LBC National Championships Clash, and its $100,000 purse, from Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine.

The PBA LBC National Championships will run on weekends from June 3-July 17, with June 24-25, July 1-2 and July 8-9 being ideal weekends for the touring PBA50 players to enter.

Two PBA50 Regional events will also be available along the way for touring players, July 24-26 in Wyoming, Mich.; and July 28-30 in Bowling Green, Ohio. Dozens more PBA50 Regionals around the country will be announced soon.

Two PBA60 National Tour events for players age 60-and-over are also on the schedule, including the season-opening USBC Super Senior Classic in Las Vegas, which will kick things off on May 31, prior to the Senior Masters. PBA60 Tour players will also travel to Ohio for the PBA60 Tristan’s T.A.P.S. Memorial Tournament at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in July.

PBA50 Tour Leads to ESPN Finale in 2013

A new name, new venues, a season-long points competition leading to an ESPN-televised finale, and a crop of new star players will highlight the 2013 PBA50 Tour season.

The 2013 PBA50 Tour (formerly PBA Senior Tour) schedule will consist of 11 tournaments, with new stops in Welch, MN; Tampa, FL (tentative), and Trussville, AL.

 

The season-long points competition will qualify the top three players for the ESPN-televised PBA50 Tour Finals, which will be a stepladder event conducted during the 2013 PBA World Series of Bowling V next November. Also, selected PBA50 Tour events will be webcast live on pba.com’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame. Details regarding the televised finals and Xtra Frame schedule will be announced later.

 

“We are thrilled to be bringing a PBA50 final back to TV,” said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark. “A national audience will see first-hand that the competition on the PBA50 Tour is intense and important, and the crop of players eligible will excite all bowling fans. The PBA is committed to its over-50 membership and proud to be bringing the best of the best to a national television audience.”

 

The PBA50 Tour will also include other changes, including a revised format that advances more players to match play in selected events that attract 120 or more entries.

 

The Super Senior prize fund, for the age 60-and-older players who finish out of the regular prize list, will also be revised. In previous years, Super Senior cash spots were awarded based on total entries. For 2013, cash spots will be awarded at a ratio of 1:6 Super Senior entries, with a minimum of eight and a maximum of 10 cashing in each tournament.

 

Las Vegas will continue to host the PBA50 Tour’s two major championships, with the Suncoast Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center hosting the Suncoast Senior U.S. Open, presented by Storm, June 2-7, followed by the United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center, June 9-14.

 

The 2013 PBA50 season will again see a new crop of top-level players from the PBA Tour eligible to compete, including PBA Hall of Famers Pete Weber, Parker Bohn III and ESPN analyst Randy Pedersen. Also on the list of those becoming eligible at age 50 in the months ahead are PBA Tour champions Jack Jurek, Chris Warren and David Traber.

PBA Senior Tour Heads for Oympia Lanes in Hammond

As the 2012 PBA Senior Tour season draws to a close, a field of approximately 120 players will compete in the PBA Senior South Shore Open presented by DV8 Aug. 6-9 at Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Ind.  The Senior South Shore Open is the second-to-last event of the season which wraps up with the Senior Decatur Open presented by Brunswick Aug. 11-14. Here are a few storylines heading into the Hammond event:

Walter Ray Williams Jr. hopes to clinch first Senior POY crown: Heading into the final two tournaments of the PBA’s 2012 Senior Tour season, Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr., holds a commanding lead in the Senior Player of the Year points race. As the Senior Tour’s only two-time winner this season, the
52-year-old  holds a 16-point lead over fellow Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli
and Mike Edwards. If he can clinch POY in Hammond it would be his first Senior
honor to go along with a record seven PBA Tour POY awards. Williams was also the 2010 Senior Rookie of the Year.

Return of Johnny Petraglia to 2012 season: PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia will make his return to the 2012 season after a three-month absence because of shoulder surgery. Right before his surgery, Petraglia, a 14-time winner on the PBA Tour and seven-time winner on the Senior Tour, became the only bowler in PBA history to win a PBA Tour or Senior Tour title in six different decades when he won the Senior Dayton Classic in May. Fellow PBA great Dick Weber also won titles in six decades but his final tournament win was a PBA regional title.

Former Tour players make their mark on Senior Tour in first year of eligibility:
This season four players have scored wins in their first year of eligibility
including Lennie Boresch Jr., who won the Sun Bowl in The Villages in his Senior Tour debut; former PBA Tour player Bob Learn Jr. (Senior Mooresville Classic), Amleto Monacelli (Senior U.S. Open) and Mike Edwards (USBC Senior Masters).  All are in contention for Senior Rookie of the Year honors which is determined by a vote by PBA members and selected bowling media.

Harry Sullins hoping to defend his title: In 2011, Harry Sullins, a winner of
five PBA Tour titles, won his second Senior Tour title of the season and third
of his career by defeating eventual Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Eagle
River, Alaska, 246-221, in the championship match of the Senior Lake County
Open.
PBA legend Dave Soutar’s career coming to a close: After more than a
half-century competing on the PBA National and Senior Tours, Hall of Famer Dave Soutar of Bradenton, FL, will call it a career at the conclusion of the 2012
Senior Tour season. Soutar has logged 51 years in PBA competition and a record
257 Senior Tour tournaments heading into the Hammond event. He is an 18-time PBA Tour winner and seven-time winner on the Senior Tour which includes the 2002 Senior Lake County Open.

Hammond’s own Kenny Parks hoping for first title of the season and second of his career:  Kenny Parks of Hammond, the winner of the 2008 USBC Senior Masters, will be trying for his second career Senior Tour title. His best finishes this season are a seventh and 11th and he finished fourth in last year’s Senior Lake County Open.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. Wins Second PBA Senior Event

Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. made a bid to become the favorite for 2012 Senior Player of the Year honors by winning the PBA Senior Northern California Classic presented by Track Wednesday at Harvest Park Bowl, Brentwood CA.

The seven-time PBA Player of the Year became the first two-time winner this
season by defeating Hugh Miller of Seattle, 248-231, in the championship match.

“A lot of my matches today were closer than they looked,” said Williams, who was the 2010 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year. “It wasn’t all smooth sailing because I had a couple of matches that came down to the 10th frame. But I did what I had to do to win.”

Williams, who won the Senior Don Carter Memorial earlier this season, captured his fourth career Senior Tour title to go along with his PBA Tour career-leading 47 titles. He also improved on seventh and 17th-place finishes in his previous two Senior Northern California Classic appearances.

“The first game I bowled in match play I shot 194 and missed the pocket one time so I had to go to another ball to get a better reaction on the backend,” said
Williams, who won a total of four matches Wednesday. “I had one open and don’t think I missed the pocket maybe two or three times all day. I’m just glad I
didn’t waste all my strikes in qualifying.”

Miller was trying to become the seventh different winner of the season and was
coming off a fifth-place finish in the Etonic PBA Senior U.S. Open and
second-place finish in last week’s United States Bowling Congress Senior
Masters.
In the semifinals, Williams defeated Mike Dias of Lafayette, CO, 259-228 and
Miller defeated PBA Hall of Famer Wayne Webb of Columbus, Ohio, 216-205, to advance to the title match.

The 2012 PBA Senior Tour season takes a six-week break before it resumes with the PBA Senior South Shore Open presented by DV8 at Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Ind., Aug. 6-9, and the season-ending PBA Senior Decatur Open presented by Brunswick Aug. 11-14 at Spare Time Lanes in Decatur, IL.

Patraglia Wins PBA Titles in Six Decades With Dayton Win

Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia became the first player in PBA history to win a national tour or senior tour title in six decades by winning the PBA Senior Dayton Classic presented by Roto Grip Thursday at Capri Lanes.

Petraglia, who won his eighth career Senior Tour title, also ended a three-year
drought without a win by defeating reigning Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, 220-204, in the title match.

Petraglia, who was the top seed for the finals, started strong with the first
three strikes but then ran into trouble in the fourth frame throwing a 4-6-7-10
split.  He threw another split (3-7) in the seventh frame but was able to close
out the match with four strikes and a nine-count which was enough to beat Mohr who was also struggling.

“When I threw that first split it surprised me because I thought it was going to
be a strike,” said the 65-year-old Petraglia, whose last Senior Tour title came
in the 2009 Sun Bowl In The Villages. “Frankly, I was a little lost at that
point. I really didn’t make an adjustment until after that second split when I
moved right on the approach, threw it a little farther left on the lane and
trusted that it would come back and it did.

“I guess some things are meant to happen,” he added. “Ron was having trouble on the left lane leaving three 10-pins which meant if I could get back to striking
I could still win the match.”
Overall, Petraglia and fellow PBA legend Dick Weber both have PBA titles in six
decades, however, Weber’s longevity mark includes a PBA regional title.
Petraglia also owns 14 PBA Tour titles, winning his first at a national tour
stop in Ft. Smith, AR, in 1966 at the age of 19.

“I guess it shows how old I am,” Petraglia said jokingly after achieving the
milestone. “But this is very special to me because it’s part of history and
makes it all worth it. “You know at my age, I was wondering if it was going to happen,” he said. “There are so many great Senior Tour players and there are more great bowlers from the regular Tour who are becoming eligible so it doesn’t get any easier. Another thing that makes it special is that there are some guys that might be able to tie this record in the coming years but probably not going to break it.”

In the semi-final match, Mohr, trying for his first title of the season and
eighth of his career, defeated Ron Profitt of Brookville, Ohio, 238-222, to
advance to the title match.  In the opening match, Profitt defeated last week’s
Senior Mooresville Classic winner Bob Learn Jr. of Erie, PA, 243-217.  Learn
beat Profitt in the championship match of that tournament, 203-196, for his
first Senior Tour title.
The Senior Tour takes a two-week break before the Senior U.S. Open June 3-8 at the Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas. The season’s first major will be
streamed live in its entirety on bowling’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame.

Walter Ray Williams Jr Tops Senior Don Carter Memorial Open

Rebounding from a tough 2011-12 Professional Bowlers Association Tour 

season and coping with the emotions resulting from his father’s recent passing, 

Walter Ray Williams Jr. persevered to win the PBA Senior Don Carter Memorial 

Open presented by Ebonite Wednesday for his third career Senior Tour title.

Williams defeated Bo Goergen of Sanford, MI, in the championship at Carter 

Family Bowl, 247-217, marking his first Senior Tour win since the Senior Mark 

Roth Allentown Open in May of 2011.

In the 2011-12 Tour season, the 52-year-old Hall of Famer’s record streak of 26 

consecutive years making at least one TV finals appearance came to an end and 

he had a best finish of only 17th in the Shark Open. On Tuesday his father 

passed away after a lengthy illness.

“I’m not an emotional person but I’ll have to admit this was an emotional week 

for me,” said Williams. “It helped a great deal to have my family here not only 

for my dad but also to be here to watch me bowl.”

Even though the scores showed that Williams was dominant in match play, he 

felt fortunate to win all four of his matches Wednesday.

“On paper it looked easy but I can tell you that in a few of those matches my 

opponents bowled better than they scored,” said the PBA Tour all-time titles 

leader with 47 wins. “An example was Bo in the title match when he started with 

the first five (strikes) but then had a split in the sixth frame which gave me an 

opening.”

Williams’ win in the second tournament of the 2012 season comes off a 

fourth-place finish in last week’s season-opening Senior Sun Bowl In The Villages 

in The Villages, Fla.

“It was a great tournament and nice to win again,” Williams said. “It’s a 

confidence builder and now I just hope I can keep some momentum going and 

hope for a good Senior Tour season.

“The lanes play a little differently out here than they do on the regular tour but 

you still have to make good shots and when you don’t, you have to make the 

right adjustments. I just wasn’t throwing enough good shots last season on tour.”

In the semifinals, Williams defeated fellow Ocala resident Brian Brazeau, who 

was trying for his second Senior Tour title, 246-213.  In the other semifinal, 

Goergen, who was trying for his first Senior Tour title, defeated Tim Kauble of 

Marion, Ohio, 190-165.

The next stop for the PBA Senior Tour will be the Senior Mooresville Classic 

presented by Columbia May 6-9 at George Pappas Victory Lanes in Mooresville, 

N.C.

Will Ron Mohr Dominate For 2012 Senior PBA Tour Season?

For reigning Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr, his domination during the 2011 season will be a tough act to follow in 2012, but he’s up to the challenge. 

Mohr, of Eagle River, Alaska, will begin defense of his 2011 Senior Player of the Year title when the 2012 Senior Tour season begins April 21-24 with the Sun Bowl In The Villages presented by Storm at Spanish Spring Lanes. 

Mohr won a record-tying four titles in the 10 PBA Senior Tour events he entered in 2011, supported by a 67-30 record in his head-to-head matches and an equally impressive qualifying record. 

In 10 tournaments, Mohr was the leading qualifier twice, No. 2 twice and he qualified lower than seventh only one time. In what was probably his worst event in 2011, after finishing in 77th place after the first eight qualifying games in the Senior Decatur (Ill.) Open, Mohr moved up 53 places over the next eight games to make the cut to match play by four pins, qualifying 24th. 

“I’m really fighting the notion that it was a career year and can’t be repeated,” Mohr said. “But on the other hand it’s unrealistic to expect to have a year like that again.” 

In addition to his four titles – including his first major championship in the Senior U.S. Open – Mohr finished out of the top four only one time. He was second twice, third twice, fourth and had a 13-place finish in Decatur. The only tournament he didn’t enter was the USBC Senior Masters which he missed in order to attend a family wedding. 

“The real expectation is that over time things even out but I’ve kept a winning attitude and feel as well prepared if not better than last year going into this season,” he said. “Last year was something I never expected and I admit I had a lot of things go my way. I just need to keep that winning attitude and let everything else take care of itself.” 

Tom Baker (2006), Bob Glass (2001), Dale Eagle (1999) and Pete Couture (1998) also had four-title seasons, but only Baker’s was in a comparable number of events (nine). 

In 2006, Baker finished second, third, fifth, seventh and 24th in his other five events. Eagle won four times in a 15-tournament schedule while Glass and Couture won their titles in 14-event seasons. No one had a perfect 11-for-11 cashing record in 2011, but of the nine players who cashed in 10 events, Mohr, Baker, Peter Knopp and Henry Gonzalez were 10-for-10 while Walter Ray Williams Jr., Harry Sullins, Mike Henry, Kenny Parks and Eagle cashed in 10 of 11 events. 

The only statistical category where Mohr fell short was in scoring average which was led by Williams with a Senior Tour record 229.56 and Mohr finished second with 225.98. Defending champion Sullins of Chesterfield, Mich., defeated Williams, 248-239, to win last year’s Sun Bowl In The Villages for his second career Senior Tour title.

August 6-9 - PBA Senior South Shore Open presented by DV8, Olympia Lanes, Hammond, Ind.
August 11-14 Senior Decatur Open presented by Brunswick, Spare Time Lanes, Decatur, Ill.
Among those becoming eligible for the 2012 Senior Tour season will be PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli and Tour veteran Mike Edwards.
