Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Mark Williams defeated Harry Sullins, 246-183, to win his second consecutive PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open at Olympia Lanes, Hammond, IN, Tuesday.
It was Williams’ first title of the 2009 season having had previous best finishes of second in Mooresville, NC, in May and third at the Senior U.S. Open in Las Vegas in June.
Williams gave some of the credit for his win to bowling in a center that seemed
to match up well with his game which was also the case when he won the
Tournament of Champions on the regular PBA Tour in 1985 and 1988 at Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn, Ohio.
“You definitely have centers where your game matches up better than others,”
Williams said. “You can’t always put your finger on why but I think that’s the
case here. It was a similar case bowling at Rivera Lanes where I won my two Tournament of Champions titles.”
The 51-year-old Williams, who earned $8,000 for the win, advanced to the
championship match by defeating Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska in the
semifinal, 221-177. Mohr won the first two Senior Tour events of the 2009
season and is the current PBA Senior Tour points leader.
Sullins, of Chesterfield Township, Mich., advanced to the championship match by
defeating Kevin Croucher of Grants Pass, OR, 176-160.
“I think I had an advantage where I was able to play inside or outside to get
the ball reaction I wanted,” Williams added. “The other guys seemed to be
having trouble getting the ball through the front part of the lane from where
they were playing.”

Weber Leads First Round Of PBA Motor City Open
Pete Weber, a notoriously slow starter, charged out of the gate at a 243.8 average clip to take the first round lead in the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association (PBA’s) Motor City Open, the opening event in the PBA’s five-week World Series of Bowling, Tuesday at Taylor Lanes, Taylor, MI.
The 38-year-old, 34-time PBA champion from St. Ann, MO, rolled games of 202, 268, 258, 211 and 280 for an 11-pin lead over Chris Barnes of Double Oak, TX, in the opening round qualifying. Right behind Weber’s 1,219 five-game total, and reinforcing the international flavor of the World Series, was Colombia’s Andres Gomez in third place with 1,187 pins.
Six countries, including the United States, were represented in the top 24. In
addition to Gomez, international players among the leaders were Sweden's Martin Larsen in eighth place, Venezuela's Amleto Monacelli and Canada's George Lambert IV tied for 16th, and Australian two-handed specialist Jason Belmonte tied for 22nd. Another four countries are represented in the field of 131 players.
"I have no complaints,” Weber said after his round. “I’m usually not that quick out of the gate at the first tournament of the year. I practiced pretty hard for
two weeks before I got here. Something was missing in my game. I bowled a
regional tournament and I didn’t cash, so I got hold of my brother Rich and we
worked on my game – not just throwing the ball a few times to see how it felt,
but real practice."
The complete field will bowl a second five-game qualifying round later Tuesday.
After a third qualifying round Wednesday, the top 24 players will advance to
match play Wednesday evening and Thursday.

PBA Senior Tour Lake County Open
Ron Mohr, the winner of the first two Professional Bowlers Association (PBA)Senior Tour titles of the 2009 season, moved into the second-round qualifying lead Monday in the PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open at Olympia Lanes in Hammond, IN.
Mohr, of Eagle River, Alaska, led with a 3,700 16-game pinfall (231.2 average)
after bowling 1,901 in Monday’s eight-game block. He had games of 246, 256, 256, 198, 212, 232, 257 and 244. Kerry Painter of Henderson, NV, who rolled a 300 game in his second block, is in second with 3,689 bumping first round leader Wayne Webb into third.
“I’ve been bowling well this year but I can’t take anything for granted,” Mohr
said. “We have a lot of tough tournaments coming up and I have to keep working hard on the tougher (lane condition) patterns.
The field has been cut to the top 32 players who will advance to best-of-five
match play beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m. Match play continues all day on Tuesday
with the Round of 8 and championship rounds scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

World Series of Bowling Has World Class Sweeper
The Professional Bowling Association (PBA) World Series of Bowling has announced a new side event which features the highest entry fee for any PBA-sanctioned tournament in history. The “All-in Action” sweeper will require a $5,000 buy-in from any player entering. The All-in Action sweeper will be held Friday, Aug. 14 at 9 p.m. (Eastern) at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich., and webcast live on Xtra Frame, pba.com’s online video service. Based on a field of 16 entrants at a $5,000 entry fee each, first place will be $40,000, with players who win two matches in the two-game match play format doubling their money. The purse will adjust based on number of entries, with all entry fee money going straight to the prize fund. All bowlers, including exempt Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour players, are eligible to compete in this sweeper. The U.S. Open oil pattern, which is a flat condition considered the most difficult on the PBA Tour, will be used.
Like all of the special side events at the inaugural PBA World Series of
Bowling (WSOB), the All-in Action sweeper is not a PBA Tour event. No PBA title or statistics from the event are official. Typical Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour event entry fees are $500. Typical side event and sweeper entry fees at the WSOB range from $80 to $250.

PBA Senior Tour Kicks Off in Indiana
Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Wayne Webb averaged 229.3 to take the first-round qualifying lead Sunday in the PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open at Olympia Lanes in Hammond, IN.
Webb, of Sacramento, CA, led with a 1,835 eight-game pinfall on games of
260, 206, 202, 198, 264, 211, 268 and 226. He leads fellow Hall of Famer and
Lake County Open defending champion Mark Williams of Beaumont, TX, in second with 1,831.
The Hammond stop is the first tournament after a six-week break for the Senior
Tour this season. Webb, who won his second consecutive Senior U.S. Open title in June, spent most of the time during the break shutting down his pro shop but
hasn’t let that distraction affect his game.
“I went home and closed the shop and now I’m looking to buy a bowling center,”
Webb said. “I’m kind of in between jobs right now so I’m back to bowling for a
living for the time being."
“My muscle memory is still good and I feel my game is sharp,” he continued.
“Even with the break and having to take care of closing the pro shop I’m able to
still stay focused and do what I need to do.”
Rounding out the top five after the first round were: Harry Sullins,
Chesterfield, MI, 1817; Tom Baker, King, NC, 1,802 and Ron Mohr, Eagle
River, Alaska, 1,799.
The 119-player field will bowl another eight-game qualifying round on Monday
after which the field will be cut to the top 32 players who will advance to
best-of-five match play beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m. Match play continues all
day on Tuesday with the Round of 8 and championship rounds scheduled for 6:30
p.m.
Following Hammond, the Senior Tour visits Decatur, IL, Aug. 8-11; Joliet,
IL, Aug. 15-18 and Lansing, MI, Aug. 22-26, before ending the season with
the PBA Senior World Championship Aug. 30-Sept. 5 in Allen Park, MI.
