Wichita State University Men Win Intercollegiate Team Championships

Wichita State University Mens’ Shocker Bowling Team wins the Intercollegiate Team Championships national tournament in El Paso, Tex. The win marks the third consecutive national title for the Shockers, who won in 2008 and 2009. 

 

“They did a good job of being a great team as opposed to a collection of great bowlers,” said Wichita State bowling coach, Gordon Vadakin.

Senior and recently named Bowling Writer’s Association of America (BWAA) Player of the Year, Josh Blanchard along with senior teammate, co-captain and First Team All-American, John Szczerbinski anchored the Shockers.

Traber leads Second Round of PBA Senior Dayton Classic

Averaging 230 for 16 games, two-time Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour titlist Dale

Traber of Cedarburg, Wis., led second round qualifying Monday in the PBA Senior Dayton Classic

at Capri Lanes.

Traber, in his third full season on the Senior Tour, had games of 237, 235, 247, 248, 199, 207, 264 

and 235 in his second qualifying block Monday to bring his overall 16-game pinfall to 3,680.  He 

holds a 111-pin lead over Bobby Johnson of Chillicothe, Ohio, in second, and a 127-pin lead over 

Ron Profitt of Brookville, Ohio, in third. PBA Hall of Famer Wayne Webb, now making his home in 

Columbus, Ohio, is fourth 136 pins back.

The field of 144 players has been cut to the top 32 who will advance to best-of-five-game match 

play beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m. Eastern.  Match play continues all day on Tuesday with the Round

of 8 and championship rounds scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

“I stuck with my game plan of using one ball with a weaker shell and drilling pattern which has 

enabled me to play outside on the lane and that is where I prefer to play,” said the 52-year-old 

Traber. “I’m playing around the five or six board and not many other guys are playing out there.”

Both of Traber’s titles came in 2009 when he won the PBA Senior Northern California Classic and

the United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters for his first major title.

PBA Players Gear Up for The Japan Cup

Recently-crowned Professional Bowlers Association (PBA)  Player of the Year Walter Ray 

Williams Jr. and defending champion Patrick Allen head a list of 20 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour 

players who will compete in the DYDO Japan Cup 2010 April 22-25 in Tokyo. Qualifying will take 
place at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel and match play at Tokyo Port Bowl.

It marks the 25th straight season that PBA Tour players have been invited to compete in the event

which also includes 91 Japan Professional Bowlers Association (JPBA) players and 33 amateurs. 

In the 25 years that PBA players have been invited to the event it has been won 22 times by PBA 

pros and twice by JPBA players.

The PBA players earned their invitation through their performances in the 2008-09 season. While the

invitational event ends the 2009-10 PBA Tour season, it has no bearing on season’s points races.

Allen won the 2009 Japan Cup, defeating 2008-09 Player of the Year Wes Malott, 247-214, last 

April.  The win marked Allen’s 13th PBA Tour title and third international title.  He won the 2008 

World Tenpin Bowling Association World Championship Doubles and Team titles in Bangkok as 

a member of Team USA.

Joining Allen in the spotlight last year was fellow PBA Tour star Rhino Page, who threw the first 

perfect game in Japan Cup TV finals history and the 20th televised perfect game in PBA history. 

Page defeated Jeong Tae-Hwa of South Korea, 300-235, in the Round of 8. The perfect game 

earned Page a $100,000 bonus, matching the most prize money ever awarded to a PBA player who 

shot 300 on TV.

Allen will attempt to become the third player to successfully defend a Japan Cup. Tommy Jones won

back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005 while Parker Bohn III won the Cup three consecutive years 

from 1998-2000.

Williams is making his 25th consecutive Japan Cup appearance, making him the only player to have 

appeared in every Japan Cup in its modern configuration. Williams has made seven championship 

round appearances and won the event twice including a 289-236 win over Pete Weber in 2006 

which broke the all-time PBA Tour titles record.

For the record, Page – the youngest PBA Tour player in the field – was two years old the first year 

Williams bowled in the Japan Cup.

The 144-player field will bowl two six-game qualifying blocks at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel after 

which there will be a cut to the top 48 players who will move to Tokyo Port Bowl for best-of-seven

-game match play eliminations to determine the top eight advancing to the championship round to 

be televised exclusively in Japan.

From 1968-73, a handful of PBA pros competed in what was known as the Japan Gold Cup. 

Winners from the Japan Gold Cup era include Don Johnson (1968), Dick Ritger (1969, ’70), Jack 

Biondolillo (1971), Barry Asher (1972) and Don McCune (1973).

PBA Senior Dayton Classic First Round

Part-time Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour player Brian Miller of Springfield, Ohio, 

averaged 230.2 for eight games to lead Sunday’s first round qualifying in the PBA Senior Dayton 

Classic at Capri Lanes.

Miller, a 53-year-old accounting supervisor, bowled games of 180, 213, 225, 222, 267, 236, 289 and

210 for a 1,842 pinfall.  He has a 23-pin lead over four-time Senior Tour and two-time Lumber 

Liquidators PBA Tour titlist Bob Chamberlain of The Villages, Fla., in second with a 1,819 pinfall.

“On my first shot of the first game I threw an 8-10 split which wasn’t an encouraging start and I 

thought this is going to be a long day,” Miller said. “But as the block went on and the conditions 

changed I had the ball reaction I needed and strung together some good games.”

Miller’s previous best finish in PBA competition was third in a regular regional and a senior regional 

tournament.

The 144-player field will bowl another eight-game qualifying round on Monday after which the 

field will be cut to the top 32 players who will advance to best-of-five match play beginning 

Tuesday at 9 a.m.  Match play continues all day on Tuesday with the Round of 8 and championship

Now, the familiar “Air Jordan” logo will appear on a customized bowling ball for a Jordan Brand Bowling event April 15th in New York, thanks to a deal struck between Bowlerstore.com and Lucky Strike Lanes. 

The customized Jordan balls will be used by participants in the event, and also given away to a few lucky participants as commemorative items.

PBA Woman's Series Showdown Sunday

The 2009-10 PBA Women’s Series presented by BOWL.COM concludes its third season with the 

PBA Women’s Series Showdown at the new International Training and Research Center Sunday on 

ESPN with six of the sport’s top women bowlers vying for a $25,000 prize in a unique competition.

The PBA Women’s Series Showdown, presented by BOWL.COM, will air on ESPN Sunday at 1 p.m. 

Eastern.

PBA Exemptions For 2010 -2011

The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) has confirmed 52 of 53 exemptions for the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season, which will get underway in late October.

The exemption list – except for one Golden Umbrella exemption to be awarded later in the year – includes title winners, players from the 2009-10 Lumber

Liquidators PBA Tour World Ranking Points List, seven qualifiers from the 2009 PBA Regional Players Invitational, the points leader among Tour Qualifying Round competitors who finished outside of the exempt points list (Dave D’Entremont of Middleburg Heights, OH), and two players who were granted hardship or medical deferments last season (Baltimore’s Danny Wiseman and Dave Arnold of Dublin, CA).

The PBA also announced how exemptions and pre-event qualifying competitions will be used to fill the 96-player field for the 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling and PBA World Championship. In addition to the 53 PBA Tour exemptions, 20 players will earn berths out of the PBA Regional Players Championship optional qualifying event, 20 more will earn berths in a pre-World Series qualifier, and three spots will be awarded PBA Commissioner’s exemptions.

season: Lumber Liquidator PBA Tour Exemptions for 2010-11

Exemptions to bowl full-time as members of the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour for the 2010-11 season will be awarded to 53 individuals based upon the following criteria (see below for criteria for 43 additional exemptions that will apply to the 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling):

● Winners of the PBA’s four major championships, which provide multi-year exemptions: U.S. Open, three years; Tournament of Champions, USBC Masters and PBA World Championship, two years each (based upon any remaining eligibility).

● Winners of a PBA Tour standard title during the previous season.

● Placing in the previous season’s World Point Rankings list, minus those who have otherwise earned exemptions, up to a maximum of 42.

● Leading non-exempt member in the previous season’s World Point

Rankings (among players who regularly participate in Tour Qualifying Rounds).

● Top 7 finishers in the previous season’s PBA Regional Players Invitational (RPI).

● Resuming a previous exemption after a medical or hardship deferment.

● Receiving a “Golden Parachute” exemption from the PBA (granted to one non-exempt player by the PBA leadership).

Weekly exemptions are awarded through a PBA Tour Qualifying Round (TQR). The number of exemptions may vary by event.

2010 WORLD SERIES OF BOWLING ELIGIBILITY

A total of 96 players will qualify to participate in the 2010 PBA World Series

of Bowling, an event that will consist of five daily “animal pattern” stages

with total pinfall for all five events combined producing the final standings

for the 2010 PBA World Championship. The first 53 positions will be awarded to 2010-11 Exempt Tour players (see above); the remaining 43 World Series of Bowling berths will be awarded as follows:

● 20 berths will be awarded to players who pay an optional World Series Trials

entry fee during the PBA Regional Players Championship (RPC) May 28-31 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich. (exemptions will be based upon total pinfall for the first 16 qualifying games in the RPC). Players will be exempt for the entireWorld Series, with no additional entry fees.

● 20 berths will be awarded to players competing in a second World Series Trials event to be held immediately preceding the World Series of Bowling (tentatively scheduled for Las Vegas in late October). Format and entry fee has not been finalized. Players will be exempt for the entire World Series, with no

additional entry fees.

● Three PBA Commissioner’s Exemptions will be awarded and will be valid for the entire World Series only.
