PBA Senior Mooresville Miller High Life Classic

Averaging 246.5 for eight games Monday, Professional Bowlers Association (PBA)Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia of Manapalan, N.J., holds the first round lead in the PBA Senior Mooresville Miller High Life Classic at George Pappas Victory Lanes.

The 62-year-old left-hander had a 1,972 pinfall with games of 255, 257, 300, 259, 254, 226, 214 and 207 to hold a 28-pin lead over Bill Spigner of Vernon Hills, Ill., in second with 1,944. Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska. who won the first two Senior Tour stops of the season is in fifth with 1,922.

Petraglia’s 300 game was one of eight during the event’s opening round.

“I had a great shot all eight games but didn’t have the carry the last three games,” said Petraglia, who was inducted into the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame last week. “Actually, the shot hasn’t been as easy for me this tournament but I’m carrying strikes better here.”

Petraglia, who joined the PBA in 1965 and has 14 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour titles to his credit, also owns six career Senior Tour titles. He was the PBA Senior Rookie of the Year in 1998.

In the first two events of the 2009 Senior Tour season, Petraglia has finished third and 17th.

“The bowling’s been good and I have no complaints,” Petraglia continued. “I haven’t missed being in the top 32 since the first tournament of last year.”

The 144-player field will bowl one more eight-game qualifying round Tuesday before the field will be cut to the top 32 qualifiers for match play rounds on Wednesday. Match play begins with the round of 32 on Wednesday which will feature players who qualified 17th-32nd. Bowlers qualifying 9th-16th will receive one bye and those qualifying in the top eight will receive two byes. The Round of 8, semi-final and championship matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday.
